30th April 2012: DEAD SEA, Jordan

The Dead Sea is, in fact, a large, salty inland lake, as well as being the world's largest open-air spa.It occupies the Great Rift Valley, a deep geological cleft which can be traced from Turkey all the way into East Africa. Its shoreline, at 400m below sea level, marks the lowest point on earth and is stiflingly hot for most of the year.....but not on the day we visited!
It was such a misty day you could only glimpse Israel on the other shore.

The jetty down to the water looked harmless but was VERY slippery and dangerous with all the salt from the water.

We'd arrived early but there were plenty of people in the water already.

The very helpful, and cautious, Egyptian life-guard who saved Steve from coming a- cropper.
Steve braved it into the water......after a few slips and slides.

And he really DID float.

Hard to believe, but there is a beach here, with people sun-bathing and sitting under sun umbrellas.

The mud is renowned for its medicinal properties.

Taking Andy and Marnie's advice, we'd paid to be Day Guests at the Movenpick Resort, so enjoyed the rest of the day relaxing  there.
